Heel Pain Solutions Finding Relief With Podiatric Treatment

Heel pain can make it difficult to move comfortably throughout your day. Dr. Jimmy Gregory, a podiatrist in Atlanta, Decatur, GA, is here to help. Here, we'll explore some common causes of heel pain and the podiatric treatment solutions that can help you find relief.

Common Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain can strike without warning, or you may have an exacerbating event (such as an injury) that can cause heel pain.

Common conditions that result in heel pain include:

  • Plantar fasciitis: This condition often causes stabbing pain in the heel, especially first thing in the morning. Plantar fasciitis is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes.
  • Heel spurs: These bony growths occur on the underside of the heel bone. Many people who experience heel spurs also have plantar fasciitis.
  • Achilles tendinitis: This condition causes pain and stiffness along the back of the heel. It results from inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.
  • Heel pad syndrome: Typically, the fat pad of the heel cushions the heel bone. Sometimes, this pad can thin or degrade, leading to heel pad syndrome. Heel pad syndrome symptoms include heel pain while standing or walking.

Podiatric Treatment for Heel Pain

When you come into the office for help with your heel pain, Dr. Gregory will examine your heel(s) and ask questions to learn more about your medical history and symptoms.

After determining the underlying cause of your heel pain, Dr. Gregory will create a personalized treatment plan to relieve your pain. Treatment may include rest and activity modification as your heel heals, stretching and strengthening exercises to help heal your injury and prevent its recurrence, footwear and orthotics from supporting your heel and relieving pressure, lifestyle changes, and more.

At each appointment, we'll discuss your healing progress and make changes to your treatment plan as necessary to ensure that we're working toward a life without heel pain.
