The Proper Way to Care for Your Feet

Keeping feet healthy and happy doesn’t have to be difficult.

Your feet do so much for you, so isn’t it about time that you evaluated whether you are doing everything you can to keep them functioning at their best? We know that we can easily put our feet through a lot of abuse day in and day out, and your podiatrist in Atlanta and Decatur, GA, Dr. Jimmy Gregory can certainly help when problems arise; however, if you want to prevent problems from occurring in the first place, follow some of these helpful tips:

Wash your feet daily

Standing in the shower isn’t enough to get your feet clean—you actually need to use soap and warm water on your feet and around your toes to make sure that you fully removed any dirt, germs, and grime. However, be aware that soaking your feet too long could dry them out, as well. If your feet are prone to dry skin, make sure to thoroughly dry them after getting out of the shower and then apply a moisturizer.

Protect against fungal infections

If you are at the gym locker room or shower, it’s important that you wear those shower shoes. Walking around barefoot in these damp, dark public environments could leave you with a nasty fungal infection. So before hitting the showers after a great workout or enjoying a day at the local swimming pool, make sure to pack and wear those flip-flops.

Trim nails properly

You should also trim nails regularly. Nails should always be aligned with the tips of your toes, making sure to cut straight across rather than at an angle. Cutting nails so they are curved at the edges can increase your chances for developing an ingrown toenail.

Wear the proper footwear

If you are an athlete or you have a labor-intensive job, it’s important to know which shoes are most appropriate for your job. If you are standing on your feet all day for work, you want to choose comfortable shoes that are cushioned and offer arch support. Some people may want to consider shoes with hard toecaps or other special features depending on their job.
