What Is a Neuroma?

Foot pain can make getting through your day difficult and unpleasant, especially when the pain is constant and severe. If you are experiencing intense pain between your toes while walking, you may have a neuroma, a pinched nerved, or benign growth of nerve tissue.

With the help of podiatrist Dr. Jimmy Gregory, with offices in Decatur and Atlanta, GA, you can relieve the pain caused by neuroma so you can walk easily again.

What causes a neuroma?

A neuroma, which usually develops between the third and fourth toes, can be caused by foot deformities, including high arches or flat fee, or damage to the nerve, which causes inflammation or swelling. Wearing poorly fitting shoes, especially ones with high heels or pointy toes, can also lead to the formation of a neuroma. Stress to the foot can also be a factor.

What are the symptoms of a neuroma?

A neuroma can cause numbness, tingling, a burning sensation, or severe pain between the toes or on the ball of the foot. The pain is usually more intensive while walking, and you may feel less discomfort when barefoot.

How can I treat my neuroma?

If you are experiencing foot pain, you should first visit your podiatrist at our Decatur or Atlanta office for a foot examination and possibly an X-ray. Depending on the severity of your neuroma, your podiatrist may recommend one or more of the following:

  • Wear shoes with low heels and a roomy toe box, and with thick soles and inner cushioning
  • Massage and rest your foot
  • Ice the area
  • Try over the counter shoe insoles
  • Use padding for the ball of the foot
  • Take anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Cortisone injections
  • Use of custom orthotics

For severe cases of neuroma, your podiatrist may recommend surgery at our Decatur or Atlanta office to remove the inflamed nerve.
