Continue reading to learn more about hammertoes and bunions and how they can be corrected.

What Are Hammertoes?

Hammertoes are a foot condition where the toe has an abnormal bend in the middle joint, causing the toe to bend downwards. Pain can be caused by constant chafing of the toe against your shoes and can be relieved by wearing footpads or shoe inserts, but severe cases will need surgery.

Hammertoes can be caused by wearing certain types of shoes, such as high heels or shoes that are tight around the toes, trauma to the toe, such as badly stubbing the toe, or an abnormal balance of the muscles in the toe.

What Are Bunions?

Bunions are bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe. Bunions occur when bones in the foot shift slightly out of place. Bunions can be irritated by rubbing against the sides of your shoe and bunions can cause the skin around them to become red and sore. Wearing tight or narrow shoes may squeeze the bunion and cause irritation to occur.

Bunions can be caused by a deformity in the shape of the foot, such as low or flat arches in the feet or from arthritis in the foot.
